Food Security in Uganda

In the past 4 weeks, have you been worried that your family would have enough food?

Family Dietary Diversity Over Time

Farming families showed an average increase of 574% in access to nutrients from 2017 to 2020.

Data collected in case study for projects in Lira and Kole, Uganda from 2017-2020

Farmers bring whatever they can grow to their local market to sell. At the start of the program, we typically see that farmers have about 2 food items to sell. On average, by year 3 with their flourishing Forest Garden, they have 12 - this allows them to produce thousands of fruits and vegetables each year!

planting a better future

Trees for the Future’s approach has an incredible impact on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

  • Decent work and economic growth
  • Partnerships for the goals
  • Climate action
  • Reduced inequalities
  • No poverty
  • Zero hunger
  • Responsible consumption and production
  • Good health and well-being
  • Life on land

With our Strategic Growth Plan as our compass, we are working to plant 1 million people out of poverty by planting 125,000 Forest Gardens by 2025. We are doing this through the expansion of our Forest Garden projects, collaboration with partner organizations, and the replication of our model through training others. In the last year, despite the many challenges we have faced with climate change and COVID-19, we have made immense progress towards our goals.

2020

Expansion: 90% - Collaboration 4% Replication 6%

2025

Expansion: 65% - Collaboration 10% Replication 25%

2030

Expansion: 30% - Collaboration 20% Replication 50%

We Owe It All to You

Thanks to our incredible community of supporters, we have been growing at an average annual rate of 50% over the past two years! Why does this matter? It means we can plant more trees and reach more families, faster.

“I support Trees for the Future because it is a well-rounded approach to solving multiple problems….This is the kind of long-term, high-impact approach that really will change the future for the better!”
