Peter Mwakabwale

Peter Mwakabwale serves as the Country Director for Trees for the Future in Tanzania. In this role, he provides strategic leadership to ensure both programmatic and administrative excellence. His responsibilities include setting a clear strategic direction, overseeing personnel and financial management, fostering staff development, and ensuring compliance with donor requirements and organizational policies.

With over 30 years of experience, Peter brings a strong background in value-based strategic leadership, managing high-performing teams, promoting accountability, and facilitating transformative change. He has designed and implemented gender-transformative programs across several countries, including Tanzania, Mozambique, and Ethiopia.

Peter holds an International Master of Science in Social Work from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden and is currently completing his PhD in Development Studies at the University of Dar es Salaam. He is deeply committed to feminist leadership, results-oriented programming, and fostering sustainable change in the communities he serves—a philosophy he describes as “leaving the footprint.”

Before joining Trees for the Future, Peter led the Programmes portfolio at Plan International Tanzania. Outside of work, he enjoys connecting with nature through camping and hiking, and at home, he finds joy in cooking and baking.
